The Ultimate Guide to Movies by The Lake in Downtown Burlington

Nothing captures the magic of summer like watching a favourite movie beneath the open sky. This season, our city is double-featuring your evening plans with two distinct, incredible outdoor cinema events. Both options are completely free, family-friendly, alcohol-free, and begin at dusk.
Whether you want a beautiful lakeside view or a cozy screening right in your neighbourhood park, Burlington has you covered. Here is the full breakdown of where to go and what to watch this summer.
Tuesdays: Movies by the Lake at Spencer Smith Park
The Burlington Downtown Business Association is bringing back the beloved Movies by the Lake series for its fifth blockbuster season. Every Tuesday evening from July 7 to August 18, the waterfront transforms into a scenic open-air theatre.
The screen sits parallel to the gazebo toward the eastern end of Spencer Smith Park, right near the Waterfront Hotel. Arriving around 7:00 PM is highly recommended so you can catch up with neighbours, grab a prime patch of grass, and watch the sunset before showtime.
The Complete Tuesday Night Lineup:
- July 14: Footloose (PG-13)
- July 21: Dumb & Dumber (PG-13)
- July 28: Ocean’s 11 (PG-13)
- August 4: Stand by Me (R)
- August 11: A League of Their Own (PG)
- August 18: Big (PG)
Thursdays: Access Storage Movies Under the Stars
If you want a movie night closer to home, the city-wide Movies Under the Stars series is the perfect solution. Running every Thursday night from July 9 to August 27, this travelling cinema hits a different Burlington park each week.
This series lets you experience different community spaces, wrapping up with a massive finale at Spencer Smith Park at the end of August.
The Thursday Night Park Schedule:
- July 9 (Ireland Park): Lilo & Stitch
- July 16 (Kilbride Park): Ice Princess
- July 23 (LaSalle Park): Mary Poppins Returns
- July 30 (Central Park Bandshell): The Karate Kid
- August 6 (Nelson Park): Hoppers
- August 13 (Emerson Park): Mrs. Doubtfire
- August 20 (Spencer Smith Park): The Wild Robot
- August 27: Rain-out makeup date
Packing Your Ultimate Movie Night Kit
To maximize your comfort while watching films on the grass, you need the right setup. Don’t leave your house without packing these local essentials:
- Low-Profile Lawn Chairs: Pick chairs that sit low to the ground so you do not block the view of families behind you.
- Heavy Blankets: The lakeside breeze drops the temperature quickly after the sun sets. Bring a tarp to place under your blankets to block any evening ground dampness.
- High-Strength Bug Spray: Being close to the lake and park trees means mosquitoes will join the audience at dusk.
- Local Takeout Snacks: While you can pack your own popcorn, consider grabbing takeout from downtown Burlington spots before the Tuesday screenings to support local businesses.
Weather Notice: Because these events are entirely outdoors, rain or high winds can cause last-minute cancellations. For Thursday night updates, check the @Burlingtondowntownbia instagram account by 3:30 PM on the day of the event.
